Lots of weaning recipes could be made by using ground oats and rice cereals as base of all the recipes and both of these are too good for baby’s health and right growth during weaning phase.

Rice and oatmeal cereals could be given to six month old babies. Following recipe is a slight variation of basic oatmeal baby cereal to add a fruity taste to cereals. The recipe is very simple and quick to prepare at home. Try it out and feed your baby with this fresh, homemade weaning cereal.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup Oats

1 banana

Breast or Formula Milk

3/4 cup water

Method:

Peel the banana, cut it into small chunks and keep aside. Ground the oats in blender or processor and keep aside. Heat water in a saucepan and bring to boil, then add ground oats. Simmer the heat and cook it for next 10-12 minute while stirring constantly and allow it to cool for few minutes. Mash the banana chunks and mix in into the prepared oatmeal cereal. Finally add some breast or formula milk into the cereal as per desired consistency. Fruity Oatmeal cereal is ready now.

Oats are one among the least susceptible foods to any kind of allergies and these are also very rich source of fibers which makes oats a perfect first food for babies. New mums can make variety of healthy weaning recipes at home for their 6 months+ babies, keeping oats as basic ingredient. Because of rich fiber contents of oats, oatmeal does not cause constipation problem to babies as rice cereal does sometimes which makes oats much more suitable as base of start up weaning recipes.

In the following baby oatmeal recipe, oats are flavoured with banana, apple and sultana which makes this recipe very tasty and nutritious at the same time. This could be one of the easiest & best weaning recipes for 6 months and older babies.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup rolled oats

1 fresh, sweet apple of medium size

1 medium sized ripe banana

1 tbsp sultanas

1/2 cup milk

1/4 cup apple juice

1 cup water

1/4 tsp nutmeg

Method:
Peel, and dice the apple into small cubes. Peel the banana, mash it and reserve in a separate bowl. Heat a saucepan over medium heat. Pour the water and apple juice into the saucepan and bring to boil. When it starts boiling, add diced apples and sultana. After 2-3 minute, add Oats into the mixture and let it come to boil again. When boiling, simmer the heat and add pinch of nutmeg. Cook it for next 12-15 minutes until turns out thick.

Turn off the heat and allow the oatmeal to cool for 5-8 minutes. Pour the prepared oatmeal in a large bowl. Now, add milk and puree it with a hand blender. Add some mashed banana into it and mix it well. Fruity baby oatmeal is ready. You can serve this healthy weaning recipe as your baby’s first food.

Weaning is a process of introducing the babies slowly to other foods (semi solid and solid) and simultaneously ceasing their habit of sucking mother milk with the same pace.

Weaning is a very important process for natural all round development of babies. Though it is not very difficult but not as simple too, a mother needs to keep lots of passions throughout the weaning process as baby initially try to reject weaning and wish to retain her regular old diet i.e. her mother’s milk.

During weaning, first baby will touch the food, play with it then gradually she will start putting it in the mouth and finally eating some. In the advanced and final stages of weaning, baby will start developing her own taste for foods, start feeling her likes and dislikes & most importantly, baby will start and stop eating by herself realising her hunger & saturation of appetite.

Weaning should be started after baby is 6 months old. The whole weaning process progresses in stages. In the first stage of weaning (6 months age), salt and sugar should not be added to weaning recipes as this only encourages a taste for sweet or salty foods later in life.
