Do you long for something sweet with you tea or coffee, but worry about the extra fat and calories?

No need to look any further. This recipe is for healthy muffins made with “good for you” ingredients, such as whole wheat flour and natural sweetener. There are many healthy sweeteners out there, I like Truvia. Other ingredients include unsweetened apple sauce and bananas. Need I say more? Try them once, and you will never have to feel guilty about enjoying muffins again.

Cooking time: 15 minutes
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Serves: 12 large muffins


  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 10 packs natural sweetener
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ cup flax seed oil
  • 1 egg
  • ¾ cup low fat milk
  • ½ cup unsweetened apple sauce
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • 2- 3 bananas, mashed
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts


1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Use paper cups to line muffin pan.

2. Combine all dry ingredients, stir.

3. In a separate bowl beat the egg, and stir in the wet ingredients.

4. Combine the dry and wet ingredients together.

5. Fold into the batter the bananas and nuts.

6. Fill muffin pan to make 12 large muffins.

7. Bake for 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle of a muffin comes out clean.

8. Banana Muffins are ready.
