Aloo Chana Masala

We are familiar with chana masala recipe usually had with pooris or bhaturas. This recipe is a combination of potatoes and chickpeas with a blend of Indian spices resulting in spicy gravy. The tangy taste of tomatoes is balanced with the mashed chana to give you a lip-smacking dish.

Serves: 2-3


  • 2 potatoes
  • ½ cup Kabul chana
  • 1 cup tomato paste
  • 1 onion, chopped fine
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 3 chopped green chillies
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • Red chilli powder and salt to taste
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • Coriander for garnish


Boil chana and potatoes. Mash half the chana, peel and dice potatoes.

Heat oil in a pan and add bay leaf, onions, ginger-garlic paste and green chillies. Fry for 2-3 minutes. Add tomato paste and cook till raw smell goes and oil appears on the sides.

Add salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and some water. Boil for few minutes. Stir in mashed chana, whole chana and diced potatoes. Sprinkle coriander powder and mix well. Close the lid and simmer for a 2 minutes. Garnish with chopped coriander.
