Grilled chicken

This grilled chicken recipe is a grilled version of chicken wherein the chicken is precooked in a pan and grilled in an oven or roasted on a tawa till it gets a nice brown color. It can be served as a starter or as a side dish with other chicken curries.

  • 500 gms chicken
  • 2 sprigs of curry leaves
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tsp chilly powder
  • 5 peppercorns
  • ½ cup curd
  • 1 green chilly
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp chilly sauce
  • Salt to taste
  • 8 garlic cloves
  • ½ inch ginger
  • A pinch of red-orange color
  • 2 cardamoms
  • ½ tsp coriander powder
  • 2 tbsp refined oil


Clean chicken and set aside.

Grind together onion, peppercorns, green chilly, garlic, ginger, cardamoms and curry leaves to a fine paste using only curd for the purpose.

Then mix this paste to the chicken. Sprinkle chilly powder, turmeric powder, red-orange color, coriander powder and salt to this. Mix well.

Cover the bowl and refrigerate the chicken for ½ an hour.

Heat oil in a pan. Drop this chicken slowly and stir well till the oil is coated to the chicken.

Then stir in soy sauce and chilly sauce. Mix well and cook the chicken for 20 minutes till it is ¾ th done covering the pan, stirring occasionally.

Then remove the lid and cook till the chicken is done and water is evaporated.

Take a pan used for grilling purpose and arrange the chicken pieces over it not overlapping each other. Grill in the oven for about 20-30 minutes turning the pieces so that both sides are roasted and get a nice brown color. Increase time if necessary.

It can also be roasted on tawa applying little oil and tossing so that both sides are roasted well.

Grilled chicken is ready. Serve as a starter with sauce.
